Traveling solo can feel like a daunting idea, especially if it’s something you've never done before. The thought of navigating unfamiliar places, dining alone, or handling unexpected challenges might bring up feelings of fear or hesitation. But here’s the truth: traveling solo can be one of the most rewarding and empowering experiences you can have.
I understand that personal growth and new experiences are key parts of your journey toward finding meaningful connections. Sometimes, this means stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing the adventure of traveling solo. Whether it’s a weekend getaway, a trip to a new city, or even a solo vacation abroad, the world is full of opportunities waiting for you.
About the Author – Leah Mackay, Travel Counsellor
Hi, I’m Leah – a 53-year-old Australian-born independent woman. Yes, I’m in a long-term relationship, so you might think it’s easy for me to travel with a companion. But here’s where you might be surprised: while we do travel together often, circumstances have changed in recent years, and my partner can’t travel as much. Yet, my passion for travel is stronger than ever.
As the owner of a travel business, I have the flexibility to travel more frequently than most. Before starting my business, I was the woman who went on at least 10 trips a year, and at least half of them were not with my partner, as his interests don’t always align with mine. Now that I’m in the business of travel, the industry often has opportunities for familiarisation trips to various destinations or hotels, many of which you could class as a solo trip.
So, how do I still manage to travel more than 10 times a year now? I stick by my life mantra, which I adopted when I turned 30 and kicked the ex to the curb: never turn down an invitation! For over 20 years, this has been my guiding principle. I’ll travel with friends, on my own, or in a small group, often with an itinerary or subject I love. I’ve even found myself meeting people I travel with for the first time at the airport.
Travelling solo is not something I shy away from, and for many people, this is simply a step too far outside their comfort zone. So let me guide you through your options as a solo traveller and a solo parent and broaden your horizons with options you may never even thought existed.
The Challenge as a Solo Traveller – Who can I Travel with?
It’s no secret that most of us prefer to travel with a companion – whether it’s a partner, family member, or close friend. Traveling together creates lasting memories and strengthens bonds. However, modern lifestyles often come with scheduling challenges. Those you want to travel with might not share your availability or enthusiasm for a particular destination. You may find yourself longing to explore the world, but the ones you want by your side aren’t always ready or able to join you.
One of the biggest misconceptions about traveling solo is that it means you’ll always be alone. In reality, solo travel often leads to new friendships and connections. Whether it’s striking up a conversation with a local or meeting other solo travellers along the way, there are endless opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals. Plus, with the rise of digital tools and travel communities, staying in touch with loved ones or connecting with fellow travellers has never been easier.
Overcoming the Challenge – Embrace the Options
The first step to traveling solo with ease is developing confidence in your ability to navigate the world. Remember, you are capable of handling much more than you might think.
One of the greatest benefits of traveling solo is the opportunity to reconnect with yourself. You have the freedom to explore your own interests, try new activities, and reflect on your personal growth. The journey isn’t just about the destination; it’s about what you learn along the way.
The first solo trip is often the hardest. Many people are understandably scared about traveling alone. The good news? The travel industry has evolved tremendously, and there are more solo travel options than ever before.
Solo travel offers endless possibilities if you’re willing to step outside your comfort zone just a little. The world is full of exciting experiences, and if you embrace the adventure, you'll find yourself connecting with incredible people and discovering new places that enrich your life.
The key is to find the right trip for you, and that’s where I come in! I’ll walk you through the process of choosing where to go, how to travel, and how to select the perfect trip for your needs. If you’re worried about being on a backpacker’s trek or stuck on a coach with a bunch of elderly folks, fear not. While these types of trips still exist, there are now so many more options tailored to today’s solo travellers.
The Options: Solo Travel is More Than Just Coach Trips
Solo travel is no longer just for the elderly or those seeking large, impersonal tours. In fact, new niche options are constantly emerging in the travel market.
Here are just a few possibilities:
Small Group Trips: Join a carefully curated group of like-minded travellers. These trips are often capped at around 12 people, offering the perfect balance between socialising and exploring independently.
Solo Cruises: Some cruise lines now offer special areas where solo travellers can meet and connect during their journey.
Bespoke Itineraries: Want to go it alone but need a guide in specific places? You can create your own custom trip with private guides to help you navigate the sights that interest you most.
Over the years, solo female travel has experienced an extraordinary rise. In fact, women are leading the charge when it comes to exploring the world solo. But that doesn’t mean men aren’t equally welcome to dive into this experience! Whether you’re looking for a destination that suits your tastes or a particular kind of experience, the options are endless.
It’s also worth noting that many solo travellers are already in relationships. They simply have different travel desires from their partners and choose to embark on solo journeys that cater to their personal interests.
You’re ready to take the plunge - Where Do You Start?
If you’re ready to start your solo journey but aren’t sure where to begin, follow these simple steps:
Choose Your Destination or Experience: What kind of trip excites you? A beach getaway? A cultural exploration? An adventurous trek? Narrow down your interests.
Select Your Group Size and Demographic: Many solo trips cater to specific age groups, interests, or gender. Some groups are capped at 12 participants, which ensures a more intimate experience.
Consider Dates, Duration, and Budget: Once you know your destination and group size, start looking for trips that match your preferred dates, duration, and budget.
To help get your wheels turning, here are some travel types you might consider:
City Breaks
Cultural and Historical Tours
Food and Wine Adventures
Activity-Based Travel (e.g., Cycling, Walking)
Wellness and Yoga Retreats
Adventure Travel (e.g., Kayaking, Rafting, Canyoning)
Solo Parent Travel (meet up with other solo parents)
Cruises (Ocean, River, Expedition, Polar)

Create Your Own Small Group & Travel for Free
Do you belong to a group or society? Or perhaps you have a small circle of friends who share a common interest? If you’re planning a trip, did you know that many travel suppliers offer free trips to group leaders? That’s right – you could organize a trip with your friends and, in some cases, travel for free as the group leader (flight costs still apply). It’s a great way to create your dream experience, share it with your friends, and get a free trip in the process.
